Dark Days: The Forge #1 is a monster of a one-shot that encompasses so much mythos of the DC archives including characters that even regular DC readers forget like Scott Free to Mister Terrific. DC is putting all their efforts around the Dark series with an epic story coming August in Dark Nights: Metal.

Every family has mysteries and secrets but the Batfamily deserves to be on Dr. Phil airing out all the secrets that came out in this comic. While Dark Days: The Forge #1 is almost forty pages long no answers were solved only mysteries that connect the past to the present with grave consequences. Batman has recently been on the ropes with the Justice League due to the events in Rebirth. Now that Hal discovers a covert team without clearing it by JL, Batfam, or the government will Batman be kicked out of the League?

The use of exposition made by Hawkman on the new metal ties in nicely delivering information on what is going on, including the gravity of the situation, but without too many spoilers. As you read through you will understand the weight of this metal being included in Dr. Fate’s mask to Aquaman’s trident. The interplay between Batman and other members of the Justice League guided the story along naturally though Duke and Hal were the ones shedding light on the mystery.  The ending was noteworthy as it was proved the secrets are no laughing matter.

Despite the numerous artists working on this title, you will notice little changes as each panel uses similar stylings. The ability to accomplish that is a great accomplishment though you can easily see Hawkman’s part was in a slightly different format. Proportionally some characters were not drawn perfectly as Duke often looked weird mostly from a misshapen head especially when in the helmet. The coloring goes a long way on adding the grit attributed towards Batman titles.

This looks to be an interesting summer as the mysteries of Dark Days: The Forge #1 hangs over the DCU. With Hal going deep into Batman’s closet exposing his numerous skeletons will the Justice League kick out Bruce Wayne?
